ABSTRACT

The present study takes a tour of the concept of reliability as one of the fundamental psychometric properties in Classical Tests Theory. The concept and its different practical applications are developed to investigate the degree of reliability of a measuring instrument. Focusing on the calculation of internal consistency from alpha and omega as the most used coefficients and the importance of calculating these coefficients by using polychoric correlation matrices (PCM). The main objective is to present a guide in Spanish for the calculation of ordinal reliability coefficients using the R/Rstudio program. Providing an example at the empirical level that shows the relevance of calculating this type of coefficients for calculating the reliability of an instrument. Using a sample of 266 adults between the ages of 18 and 63 years (M = 31.91 SD = 11.50), the version adapted to Argentina of the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire were administered. In this way, coefficients are exposed to estimate the reliability of the instruments that account for their advantages and disadvantages, performing the calculation using MCP, Pearson's correlation matrix and Pearson's covariance matrix. From the results, it is evident that the calculation using MCP provided higher degrees of reliability compared to the calculation using the other two matrices. This document is expected to be of importance to researchers unfamiliar with R.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Buffalo breeding has significantly increased in Brazil over recent years. However, few genetic evaluations have been conducted. Objective: To assess Genotype x Environment Interactions in the Mediterranean Water Buffalo in Brazil, for weight at 205 days of age, using reaction norm models via random regression. Methods: Data for buffaloes born between 1990 and 2014 were collected from five farms ascribed to the Brazilian Buffaloe Improvement Program, located in the North (1), Northeast (1), South (2) and Southeast (1) regions of Brazil. The initial database consisted of 5,280 observations at 205 days of age (W205). We assessed fit using two hierarchical reaction norm models: a two-step (HRNM2s) and a one-step (HRNM1s). Model fit was estimated using the Deviance Information Criterion, Deviance Based on Bayes Factors and Deviance based on Conditional Predictive Ordinate. The environmental descriptors were created to group individuals into common production environments based on year, season, herd and sex. Results: The best fit was obtained for the hierarchical reaction norm model with one-step (HRNM1s). Direct heritability estimates for this model ranged from 0.17 to 0.67 and the maternal heritability from 0.02 to 0.11 with increasing environmental gradient. Lower correlations among the sire classifications were obtained in comparison with HRNM1s in environments with low and high management, confirming the presence of genotype x environment interactions. Conclusion: We recommend a wider application of genetic evaluation in buffalo aimed at identifying optimal genotypes within specific environments.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: Abdominal obesity in pregnant women is an indicator of cardiometabolic risk with non-independence of general adiposity, being the ultrasound very useful to distinguish the abdomen adipose compartments also diagnose this risk at the beginning of pregnancy. Objective: To determine possible associations between the ultrasound variables of abdominal adiposity and those analytical and anthropometric in normal-weight pregnant women at the beginning of pregnancy according to metabolic phenotypes using canonical correlation analysis. Methodology: A cross-sectional study in 526 normal-weight pregnant women, between 12 and 14 weeks of gestational age, assisted in the ultrasound office at Chiqui Gómez teaching polyclinic, in Santa Clara city. Subcutaneous, preperitoneal and visceral abdominal fats were measured, as well as anthropometric and analytical variables. Three metabolic phenotypes were formed, and canonical correlation was applied to determine their relation and also behavior among the different phenotypes. Results: 2 sets of variables were identified with canonical correlations that increased from the healthy to the metabolically obese phenotype with values from 0.6930 to 0.8955 and 0.9298 respectively and high statistical significance (p=0.000). Conclusions: The link between the ultrasound variables of abdominal adiposity, subcutaneous and visceral fat and the analytical insulin resistance, lipid accumulation product, atherogenic index and blood glucose is demonstrated, evidenced by the high values of canonical correlations obtained as the phenotype changes from healthy normal-weight to metabolically obese; guiding a new approach in the resolve of the metabolic risk phenotypes in early gestation in normal-weight women.

ABSTRACT

Morphometric studies are widely used in large terrestrial species. Pirarucu is a fast-growing carnivorous fish species reaching 10 kg during its first year of life in a farming environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate correlations between weight and body measures of pirarucu to develop equations to estimate their weight through the collection of morphometric measures, as well as comparing blood glucose concentration according to weight. A total of 16 specimens with average weights ranging from 23.58 to 52.87 kg were evaluated. Weight (kg), total length (cm), standard length (cm), head length (cm), diameter at the end of the head (cm), median diameter (cm), diameter before anal fin (cm), height (cm), width (cm), and blood glucose (dm/L) were measured from each specimen. A positive correlation was observed among all variables. The highest correlation was obtained by relating weight and total length; however, among the strongest correlations, weight x average diameter (r = 0.9669, p <0.01), and weight x diameter before anal fin (r = 0.9671, p <0.01) were subjected to polynomial regression analysis due to being of easier measurement during animal containment, taking into account its size. Thus, it can be conclude that it is possible to estimate weight using regression equations using the median diameter (y = 0.577x + 57.669, r2 = 0.93) and diameter before the anal fin (y = 0.7253x + 42.518, r2 = 0.93). It could also be noted that blood glucose decreased with increasing weight of pirarucu.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A total of 6593 weight records collected from 796 male and female Anglo-Nubian goats aged up to 130 days, offspring from 29 sires and 225 dams, were used to compare models and estimate genetic parameters throughout the growth curve by applying random regression models. Direct and maternal additive genetic effects and direct and maternal permanent environmental effects were included as random in the models. The contemporary groups were included as fixed effects and goat age at kidding was included as a covariable (linear and quadratic). The choice of the best model was based on the AIC, BIC and AICc criteria. Variance estimates of the four random effects increased as the animals aged. Direct heritability (h2) rose from 0.13 to 0.40 with age, whereas maternal heritability showed a low value. Genetic correlations of weight between closer ages were high. The most suitable random regression model to compare the fitting of random effects was that which employed the Legendre polynomials of quadratic order with homogeneous variance (3333-1).(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among traits related to yield and nutritive value of alfalfa genotypes grown under deficit and full irrigation conditions. Seventy-seven alfalfa genotypes were evaluated in two different cuts, the first one with full irrigation, and the second, with water deficit. A randomized block design with three replications was used. The evaluated traits were vigor, plant height, dry matter biomass, stem-to-leaf ratio, dry matter percentage, leaf and stem protein contents, in vitro dry matter digestibility, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and lignin. Significant interaction between genotypes and environments was reported for vigor, plant height, and lignin. The correlation between traits and path analysis of dry matter biomass was performed for each cut, aiming to identify auxiliary traits for indirect selection. Water availability did not alter the phenotypic and genotypic correlations, only their magnitudes. Regardless of the environment, plant height is one of the most promising traits for the selection of alfalfa genotypes with higher dry matter biomass since it showed a high direct effect in the same sense of its phenotypic correlations. However, the coefficient of determination obtained by the model applied to full irrigation was higher than that of the water-deficit environment, indicating the importance of variables not included in this study in the determination of alfalfa dry matter biomass under dry conditions.

ABSTRACT

A total of ten rice (Oryza sativa L) seed samples of variety BR 28 were collected from the farmers of (Salakandi, Boira) Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Prevalence of fungi was recorded as Bipolaris oryzae, Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium moniliforme, through blotter test. Statistically B. oryzae was recorded as the highest prevalent fungus in all the seed samples of various architectural categories of seeds such as large (14.5%), medium (9.5%), small (11.5%) followed by (14.5%) and (4.5%), respectively in shriveled and chaffy seeds. While in large, medium and small seeds F. moniliforme was recorded significantly as the least prevalent pathogen. The effect of colour on the transmission of B. oryzae was recorded as the highest in number in case of bright seeds (8.5%) and spotted seeds (dark brown) (17.5%). The effect of smooth and rough surface on the prevalence of fungal pathogen B. oryzae was recorded as the highest in number in case of awnned seed (21.5%), smooth surface (12.25%) and rough surface seeds (18.5%). The regression equations of the fungal pathogens indicate that the morphological architecture of the seeds shape & size, colour and smooth and roughness significantly correlated with the transmission of pathogens Statistically, the highest germination of seeds was recorded in the medium sized (83.5%). The highest germination of seed was recorded in the spotted seed (69.5%). The minimum germination of seed was recorded in the bright colour seed. The highest germination of seed was recorded in the awnned seed (59.5%) followed by smooth surface (37.5%) and rough surface (53.5%). These results obviously indicate the tangible effect of the seed architecture at the transmission of the fungal pathogens affecting the planting value as well as germination of the rice seeds.

ABSTRACT

The article describes the results of studying the relationship between positive personal qualities and depression, as an antagonist of positive parameters. The following positive characteristies were studied: subjective well-being, happiness, hope, subjective success of activity, the ability to determine life goals, emotional maturity, the ability to comprehend the present, satisfaction with life, desire and initiative for personal growth, inclination to curiosity and research, motivation to seek satisfaction with marriage. The level of depression was also measured. Positive characteristics and contrasted depression show correlations among themselves, which indicates a general factor of positivity. A positive person is positive in all spheres of life and at the same time does not show any depressive manifestations. In general, depressivity is antagonistic to a person's positivity (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aims: The study focuses the organoleptic trend according to the nutritive composition of cakes processed from wheat flour enriched with the almond flour of T. catappa, a plant growing in some regions of Côte d’Ivoire. Study Design: Nine formulations of cakes processed from addition of almond flour of Terminalia catappa to wheat flour and then submitted to nutrients and descriptive sensory analyses. Place and Duration of Study: Laboratory of Biochemistry and Food Sciences, Biochemistry department of Biosciences Unit, Felix Houphouet-Boigny University, running 2015. Methodology: The contents in nutriments, namely macronutrients, minerals (macroelements and oligoelements), vitamins, and polyphenol antioxidants of the enriched cakes were determined using standard methods and their sensory description achieved. Then, the influence between both types of characteristics was assessed through the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) at ± 0.5 significance using statistical software SPSS. Results: The cakes investigated recorded invarious content in total carbohydrates (the major nutritive compound of the flours) whereas the other nutrients increased accordingly to the ratio of the almond flour incorporated for. Oppositely, the full sensory descriptors were responded with statistically similar scores over the cakes formulated. The correlation analysis mainly showed reduction of the cakes aroma during the nutrients increase, with r coefficients of –0.65 to –0.54. Thus, the study shows no rather nutritional influence of the nutritive enrichment of cakes on the sensory profile. Conclusion: The valorization of the cakes enriched with almonds of T. catappa could be sustained on the basis of their acceptance by consumers.

ABSTRACT

Bachground /aim Coronary artery imaging is one of the most commonly used diagnostic methods. We aimed to investigate whether there is a correlation between left main coronary artery (LMCA), left anterior descending artery (LAD) and left circumflex artery (LCx) artery dimensions in normal cases and a possibility to express the coronary dimensions by multiple linear equations. Materials and methods Images of coronary angiograms of 925 normal cases selected from 3855 cases made up the study population (515 men and 410 women; age range, 30–75 years). The mean age of the patients was 55.50 ± 6.49 years. The mean body mass index was 24.79 ± 1.45 kg/m2 (range, 31.30–21.26 kg/m2). The mean dimensions of LMCA, LAD and LCx were 4.18 ± 0.65 mm, 3.22 ± 0.63 mm and 3.07 ± 0.65 mm, respectively. Correlation between LMCA, LAD and LCx diameters was investigated. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop a model to elucidate the relationship between LMCA, LAD and LCx diameters. Results There was a strong correlation between LMCA dimensions and LAD and LCx dimensions (r = 0.526**, p < 0.001* and r = 0.469**, p < 0.001*, respectively). The positive correlation indicated that a regression analysis can be carried out by incorporating the measurements. Coronary artery dimensions were gender specific. Conclusion The present study explored the possibility of explaining the relationship with the LMCA and its branches by multiple linear equations, which may then be used to estimate the reference diameter of a stenosed coronary artery when the other two arteries are normal.

ABSTRACT

Identifying maize genotypes with favorable root architecture traits for drought tolerance is prerequisite for initiating a successful breeding program for developing high yielding and drought tolerant varieties of maize. The aims of the present study were: (i) to identify drought tolerant genotypes of maize at flowering and grain filling, (ii) to interpret the correlations between the drought tolerance and root architecture traits and (iii) to identify the putative mechanisms of drought tolerance via root system traits. An experiment was carried out in two years using a split plot design with three replications. The main plots were assigned to three water stress levels, namely: well watering (WW), water stress at flowering (WSF) and water stress at grain filling (WSG), and sub-plots to 22 maize cultivars and populations. Drought tolerance index (DTI) had strong and positive associations with crown root length (CRL), root circumference (RC) and root dry weight (DRW) under both WSF and WSG, a negative correlation with brace root whorls (BW), and positive correlations with crown root number (CN) under WSF and brace root branching (BB) and crown root branching (CB) under WSG. These root traits are therefore considered as putative mechanisms of drought tolerance. The cultivars Pioneer-3444, SC-128, Egaseed-77, SC-10 and TWC-324 showed the most drought tolerant and the highest yielding in a descending order; each had a number of such drought tolerance mechanisms. Further investigation should be conducted to determine the underlying root mechanisms contributing to the selection of water-efficient hybrids of maize.

ABSTRACT

Damage by Hypsipyla grandella Zeller restricts the success of plantations of Cedrela odorata. The most critical and vulnerable infection period by H. grandella is during the first three years. The aim was to estimate the expected genetic gain for the selection of clones of fast growth and resistant to the attack by this insect. A trial with 40 clones produced by grafting was planted in Veracruz, Mexico. Heritability, genetic correlations and genetic gain of clones were estimated with data at two years-old. The survival rate of the trial was of 97 % (466 living ramets in total), 2.84 m in total high and 2.32 cm of average normal diameter. Aditionally, 9.9 % of the ramets did not present attacks, indication of evasion, and 0.6 percent without response to attack. With response to attack 89.5 % of the ramets (several degrees of tolerance): 29 % with a single shoot, 14.2 % with several shoots and 46.3 % with a dominant shoot of several shoots formed. The clonal heritability of normal diameter, height, volume, stem taper index, number of attacks and response to the attack was H2c = 0.81, 0.80, 0.81, 0.61, 0.34, and 0.26. The genetic correlations between height, diameter and volume were ≥ 0.95, and the correlation of the volume with the incidence and the response to the attack was rg = -0.31 and rg = 0.62, that is a decrease in number of attacks and moderate increase in tolerance. With a selection intensity of 10 %, selecting the four clones with higher volume will produce a genetic gain of 82 % for volume, a decrease of 10.9 % of number of attacks and 6.3 % of better recovery from damage; this is more tolerance to the insect attack. The genetic gain justifies the use of the best clones in commercial plantations in Veracruz, Mexico.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Technological traits improvement of cotton fiber is a constant demand by textile industry. This research aimed to identify the potential of improved materials with high lint percentage to contribute with alleles that increase the lint percentage in Extra long staple fiber (ELS) upland cotton. Two contrasting materials for lint percentage (LP) and fiber length (FL) were used, one with long fiber and a low lint percentage (parent A) and another with high lint percentage and medium length (parent B). The following variables were evaluated: lint percentage (LP), upper half mean length (UHML), fiber uniformity (FU), fiber strength (FS), and elongation (EL). Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing's Method 4 adapted to partial diallel. Additive effects were predominant over non-additive effects. The mean LP was higher when using parent B. The opposite occurred for UHML. A negative correlation was detected between LP and UHML, showing the difficulty of obtaining genetic gain for both traits at the same time.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Semantic verbal fluency tasks (SVF) and phonological verbal fluency tasks (PVF) are highly sensitive measures used to detect and diagnose different pathologies in adult and child populations. The results of numerous investigations point out differential performances between these two tasks both in adults and children. Based on this evidence, we intend to identify the possible connections between SVF and PVF in a group of Argentinian children aged 8 to 12 years old who attended to 3rd, 5th and 7th school primary levels. Participants answered to a SVF task which tested five categories (animals and body parts for living things and transports, cloth and musical instruments for inanimate objects domain) and a PVF task where the phonemes /f, a, s/ were assessed. A correlations analysis was carried out. The result showed there is a mild association between both tasks. In addition, an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. Two differential factors were detected: a semantic verbal factor and a phonological verbal factor. Our results show that phonological and semantic are different processes and function separately in early development, although due to their correlation it is possible to conclude that both processes converge in the same store in verbal memory.

ABSTRACT

Isochores can be divided in a small number of families that cover a broad range of GC levels (GC is the molar ratio of guanine+cytosine in DNA). In the human genome, we find five families, which are (going from GC- poor to GC- rich) L1, L2, H1, H2 and H3. This organization has important consequences, as is the case of the concentration of genes, their regulation, transcription levels, rate of recombination, time of replication, etc. Furthermore, the existence of isochores has as a consequence the so called "compositional correlations", which means that as long as sequences are placed in different families of isochores, all of their regions (exons and their three codon positions, introns, etc.) change their GC content, and as a consequence, both codon and amino acids usage change in each isochore family. Finally, we discuss the origin of isochores within an evolutioary framework.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Knowledge of genetic correlations and the economics of traits are essential to decide which traits should be used as selection criteria. Objective: To estimate heritabilities and genetic, environmental, and phenotypic correlations, and direct (DRS) and correlated (CRS) responses to selection by scrotal circumference (SC), frame score (FS), and yearling weight (YW) of Mexican Charolais (CH), and Charbray (CB) young bulls. Methods: Actual SC, height and YW records (10,078 for CH, and 500 for CB) were adjusted to 365 d. The 0.0505 adjustment factor recommended by the Beef Improvement Federation was used to obtain the 365-d adjusted SC for both breeds. Height and age records were used to obtain FS. Data were analyzed using a three-trait animal model. The animal model for each trait included bull breed, contemporary group (groups of young bulls born in the same herd, year, and season of the year), and age of dam as a linear covariate as fixed effects, and direct additive genetic and residual as random effects. Results: Heritability estimates for SC, FS and YW were 0.21 ± 0.04, 0.25 ± 0.04, and 0.29 ± 0.04, respectively. The genetic correlation between YW with SC was 0.37 ± 0.16, and between YW with FS was 0.42 ± 0.16. The estimate of genetic correlation between SC and FS was low and positive (0.15 ± 0.14). The DRS was 0.38 cm, 0.18 units, and 8.30 kg for SC, FS and YW. The CRS was 0.16 cm, and 0.08 units for SC and FS from indirect selection on YW. Conclusions: Direct selection for YW is expected to be effective. Indirect selection for SC and FS based on YW would not be expected to be as effective as direct selection for improving SC and FS.

ABSTRACT

In order to unravel the inter-relationships among the four D's viz. delay, defaulting, deformity and dehabilitation, a critical analyses was taken together on estimating conditional probabilities and their relationship to specific demographic, social and economic factors. In a descriptive, cross-sectional in-depth study design, all the qualitative and quantitative types of social science research methods have been used to collect data from a total representative random sample of 450 leprosy affected persons and their families in rural and urban areas of 2 states of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in India. Findings from univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis confirm the significance of correlation among the 4 D's- delay, defaulting, deformity and de-habilitation; and also independently with all the possible influencing factors viz. type of leprosy, age, gender, religion, marital status, educational status and occupation, except for delay with religion and gender and de-habilitation with religion and type of leprosy. This study also arrives at conclusions that each of the four variables is strongly multiple correlated with the other three variables, may be explained as viz. Delay is responsible for defaulting, deformity and de-habilitation, while defaulting is responsible for deformity and de-habilitation; further Deformity is responsible for delay, defaulting and de-habilitation, subsequently. De-habilitation is the main feature that resulted by and results in delay, defaulting and deformity. Established complex association among the four variables confirms that any intervention addressing any one of the 4D's cannot produce any changes unless the intervention is intended to address all the 4D's simultaneously. The study confirms the need for a three arm social multidrug therapy similar to the medical multidrug therapy, where there would be one arm for curing the medical problems of leprosy, a second arm focusing on empowering the people, and a third arm for advocacy and peoples' full participative involvement.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Changes at the landscape scale associated with expansion in agricultural land use and changes in agricultural practices are common causes of alteration in patterns of abundance and composition of avian communities. Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata - Des Murs, 1847) is among the most common species in the Neotropics, considered both as game and pest in some countries. Here we characterized the regional and seasonal patterns of Eared Doves abundance in Southwestern Brazil and examined the relationship between landscape features and these abundance patterns. We counted Eared Doves using the point count system along routes in summer and winter and recorded land use at two scales. We used linear regressions to model the effect of landscape matrix and land use at local scale with Doves abundance in two seasons. At the landscape scale, in winter, the abundance was greater in routes crossing landscapes dominated by plantations. In summer, it was lower in routes with large tracts of forests and mixed farming. While in winter, at the local scale, the Doves abundance was greater in routes with higher frequency of maize plantations, in summer higher abundances were observed in routes with higher frequency of sugar cane and soybean plantations. Agricultural settings, which include both sustained production of food in the form of grains as well as and large stretches of habitat suitable for reproduction, favor large population of Eared Doves.
